The Indians called it Nesotaieux.

You call it Longs Peak.

We called it a full day's work.

On July 28 I led a group of twelve, including six first-timers, up the Monarch of the North. It was my ninth time (eighth summit).

Here are some photos.

After a 2:00 a.m. start, here is our group at the Boulder Field around 6:00.

Ah, the Trough. Everybody loves the trough!
(Note Black and Blue down below.)

Near the top of the Trough.

I've always race my sons up the Trough. I've always won...until this year. Here's Pip at the top of the Trough. Way to go, Pip!

McHenry's Peak as seen from the top of the Trough

Five of my group coming through the Narrows. See the woman in the green? A year ago she was just completing chemotherapy after a serious battle with cancer. Her climbing of Longs Peak a year later was not only an enormous personal accomplishment, but a statement that she was not only going to live, but she was going to live! Hats off to Kathy!

I like this picture. With the rocky slabs and the Keyboard of the Winds in the background it looks like we are making our way across the scales of an enormous dragon. The Dragon Nesotaieux.

The Hearse. The strange rock formation far below the Narrows that has an eerie resemblance to an old fashioned hearse.

The Homestretch. When we reached this spot, I said to my group, What's that I smell? The summit!
Nevertheless two of the group felt a bit intimidated by the Homestretch and went no further.
(Miss Lucy had gone no further than the Keyhole. But her story is wonderfully told HERE.)

Almost there.

To be continued...

Nine Happy Summiters! The man on the far left and the girl in front are
my oldest son and his wife. His fourth time up and her first.

With Brian Post.

With Joe Beach. Joe is a good friend; a pastor who lives and Denver and a total Dylan fanatic. Yes, we have much in common.
Joe was a professional downhill ski racer in his younger days, but he had never climbed a real mountain. He had a great time.

The summit marker.

The summit register (note the a.k.a Mr. Jinks).

Twelve up. Nine on the summit. Twelve back down. A great day was had by all.

Wonderful report, and your pictures are fantastic. The Narrows still give me the willies, but I am so happy for those in your great group made it up there. Congratulations to all. Especially Kathy.

Great job... was it really that cold up there... surprised to see so many winterish lookig coats. Do I need to add to the pack at the last minute?

Your pictures are wonderful and the trip report super. The narrows....no, no, no. The Homestretch...no way, no way, no way. (Is it possible to hyperventilate while looking at a picture? Tee Hee.) I"m glad you all had a fantastic hike, it really does sound like an awesome time.

It's usually pretty cold at Granite Pass and the Boulder Field at daybreak. 40's, sometimes the 30's.

That is the worst picture of the homestretch I have seen regarding the steep perspective. Whoa! Congrats to you and your crew! Awesome job!

Wow - Congrats to all!

But seeing those pictures of the homestretch makes me wonder - how do you get down? It makes me think I could go up, but coming down I'd be a little freaked out...

I am hoping it looks worse than it is - from pictures I must say I think the homestretch scares me more than the narrows. I'll find out in a week hopefully.

It looks worse than it is. You'll do fine.

(This time last week I was hiking in Glacier Gorge above Black Lake. Today I'm sitting in an airport dealing with flight delays. Life.)
